In the IPL 2023 mini-auction, Punjab Kings had the second-largest purse of INR 32.2 crore and released nine players, including former captain Mayank Agarwal and Odean Smith. They made headlines by spending a record-breaking INR 18.5 crore on the English all-rounder and T20 World Cup 2022 player of the tournament, Sam Curran. As a result, Curran became the most expensive player in IPL history. However, after the auction, they still needed to sign three more players to complete their full squad of 25 players and had a remaining purse of 12.2 crore.
