Mumbai Indians, the IPL 2023 franchise, faced a significant setback as Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the tournament due to a back issue.

The talented right-arm pacer had undergone back surgery in New Zealand and is expected to require four to five months to recover. This injury had previously kept him out of action for Team India since September 2022.

Bumrah’s injury woes had affected his participation in major events, including the T20 World Cup in 2022, where he had to be withdrawn from the squad. He was later named in the ODI squad for the series against Sri Lanka in 2023 but was once again ruled out.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been cautious about Bumrah’s comeback due to his recurring back problem. Saba Karim, the Former Indian wicketkeeper, recently shared insights on the situation and the BCCI’s procedure for his recovery.

Since April 2023, Bumrah has been at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, where he has been bowling seven overs a day as part of his rehabilitation.

However, the NCA support staff is taking a gradual approach to his workload, with a close assessment of his fitness before deciding on his participation in the upcoming Ireland series.

Bumrah has not yet played alongside Jofra Archer, and fans will have to wait for another season to witness the duo bowling in tandem. Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2023 campaign will commence on April 2 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Bengaluru, followed by their first home fixture against Chennai Super Kings on April 8.

Saba Karim stressed the importance of exercising caution with Bumrah’s return, especially with the 2023 World Cup in mind. He mentioned that the BCCI, selectors, and NCA support staff need to be extremely cautious and are keen for Bumrah to participate in some practice matches before making a comeback to the national team.

Jasprit’s rehabilitation process has been progressing well, and the NCA support staff aims to get him ready for the Ireland series. The three-match T20I series against Ireland is scheduled to take place from August 18 to 23 at the Village in Dublin.

As the selectors and BCCI focus on the long-term goal of the 2023 World Cup, they are taking every necessary step to ensure Bumrah’s fitness and availability for the crucial tournament.

In the 2022 IPL season, Jasprit had a rather average performance as his team ended up in the last position, marking their worst campaign in the history of the tournament. Throughout the season, the talented right-arm pacer managed to claim 15 wickets in 14 matches.

Despite the team’s struggles, Bumrah showed glimpses of his brilliance in his last 10 innings in the IPL. During this period, he was able to pick up an impressive 12 wickets, showcasing his ability to make an impact with the ball. Notably, one of his standout performances was a remarkable five-wicket haul against Kolkata Knight Riders.
